SAMMY FAIN. TLS: "Sammy Fain", 1p, 7¼x10½. Park Central Hotel, New York, 1942 June 10. To Miss Spencer. In full: "In today's 'News' you printed a 'reading' of a signature purported to be mine. I hasten to tell you it was not mine. Naturally then, your statements were so foreign to my character that my friends have been besieging me with phone calls about them and I must say that I am terribly embarrassed. In all fairness I believe that you should retract your 'findings' and so alleviate in a way the harm done me." Entire letter typed in upper case. Paper clip stain at upper left. Fine condition. Accompanied by the autograph example which Fain in this letter attests to not being his. Creased, nicked lower right corner. Songwriter Sammy Fain (1902-1989) wrote successful pop hits and show tunes for Broadway and Hollywood from the 1920s through the 1950s. As a composer, he won Academy Awards for Best Song in 1954 ("Secret Love") and 1956 ("Love is a Many-Splendored Thing"). His other hits include "Dear Hearts and Gentle People", "I'll Be Seeing You", "April Love" and "A Certain Smile".
