WOJCIECH JARUZELSKI The former Polish President signs his name twice on a black and white photograph, shown dressed in military uniform Photograph signed twice: "Jaruzelski", B/w, 5x7. Wojciech Jaruzelski (1923-2014) was Secretary-General of the Polish United Workers' (Communist) Party from 1981 to 1989 and Chairman of the Council of State from 1985 to 1989, when he became President of Poland. Not running for reelection, he served until December 22, 1990, when he was succeeded by Lech Walesa. The last communist leader of the Polish People's Republic, Jaruzelski drew criticism for his close relations with the Soviet Union and his imposition of martial law in 1981.
