Panagia,Virgin Mary. The church of Panagia Gremiotissa located on the highest spot of Chora in Ios was built in 1797 AD The name of the church derives from the rocky place where it is. The dimensions of the temple is (20.52 – 4,94m.). The west arch is longer than the east. The outer dome is octagonal and on each side alternate window and conch. According to tradition, during the Turkish occupation, when Crete was suffering under the yoke of the Turks, wishful Cretans wanting to save the miraculous icon of Virgin Mary put her on a raft, lit up a candle and trusted the Aegean waves.
