From the Label A cyberfunk creation of Bootsy Collins and Bill Laswell that drives funk into the virgin territories of ambient, hardcore, techno, and beyond. Zillatron Vs. Fuzzface is the eternal battle of good against evil and silliness against seriousness, allowing room in that wide vista to “exterminate them all.” Praxis bandmates Buckethead and Bernie Worrell combine forces with Bootsy and Bill to produce the sonic landscape of the gradual apocalypse. Over the years, Bootsy and Bill Laswell, who co-produced LORD OF THE HARVEST for Laswell’s Black Arc series on Rykodisc, have developed an intimate artistic relationship that has spanned projects as diverse as Material, Herbie Hancock, Sly & Robbie, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Praxis, several solo Bootsy, Bernie Worrell, and George Clinton projects, and countless others. LORD OF THE HARVEST fearlessly busts into the areas of hardcore thrash (notably “Exterminate” and “No Fly Zone/The Devil’s Playground”), aided and abetted by mutant fretmeister extraordinaire and Praxis-buddy Buckethead on twisted guitar, and Bootsy’s old partner, Bernie “Bernardo DaVinci” Worrell, on keys. The production in general has a collage-like feel, with found snippets and samples flying around unexpectedly — “Count Zero,” “Smell the Secrets,” and other tracks employ ambient, trance, and dub strategies, creating the appropriate sonic background to Bootsy’s mad dystopian vision of the near future. Fans of Bootsy’s extra-syrupy “Sugarcrook” ballads, meanwhile, will wallow in “The Passion Continues,” and devotees of the man’s pure virtuosity on bass will not be disappointed by “Bugg Light” and “Fuzz Face.”
