It’s the home base of the 2d Bomb Wing (2 BW) the oldest bomb wing in the US Air Force. The 2d Bomb Wing is assigned to the Global Strike Command’s Eight Air Force (8 AF) and is equipped with B-52H Stratofortress bombers. The base was established in 1932 as Barkssdale Field named after World War I aviator Lieutenant Eugene Hoy Barksdale.
