It’s the home base of the 7th Bomb Wing (7 BW) assigned to the Global Strike Command Eight Air Force. Dyess is one of two bases in the United States that stations the B-1B Lancer strategic bomber. The base was established in 1942 as Abilene Army Base (AAB) and was later renamed in honor of Lieutenant Colonel William Dyess.
